A pavement dweller from the streets of Thrissur became the 1,000th inmate at the Government-NGO temporary shelter in Kakkanad. In July, social worker Murugan S., who runs the NGO Theruvoram, rescued Ramachandran with the support of the voluntary organization ACTS and the local police. Another pavement dweller Abu, who is mentally unstable, was also adopted from Thrissur on the same day.
Social worker Murugan S. visited Thiruvananthapuram in June to
provide relief to the destitute people on the streets of the state
capital. The NGO had carried out such activities in the city in 2015
too. Ten such persons were picked up from the premises of the
Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station and they were bathed and
provided with food and new clothes. Theruvoram’s efforts were
supported by dubbing artist Bhagyalakshmi and social worker Dhanya

I cannot say challenges are new for me or difficulties unknown to me There are many cases i have attended and i got positive as well as negative outcomes.
Unfortunately, I have to attend a case today.”It is my everyday prayer to rescue at least a man from the street a day”. Today morning i was too eager to attend a rescue operation of an old woman who lived alone in her home without getting any proper care in the serious health conditions. Because of some prevailing issues i don’t have the permission to reveal her name.More interesting fact about the case is that a senior Police Officer called me directly over my mobile and asked to rescue the old lady. Which increase my confidence to attend the case without any risk.
I reached the old Mom’s house by evening 4.30pm, which situated at Kizhakkambalam panchayat in Ernakulam district. Two police men also assisted to rescue the old lady because of the absence of police officer.I have n’t seen any crowed or neighbours in the home when i entered into the house. The door was closed. I ring the bell a number of times. No response. Then i saw a window partially opened. I was shocked to see that an old lady laying on her motion spread over the floor and the nasty smell hit on my nose. Policemen and me together tried to open the main door and went inside the house. The lady was crying for water.By seeing her condition i understood that she need urgent primary medical treatment to make her alive!! Before that it is necessary to get information about her family members, relatives any would like to help her.
When i come outside the house, i was really wandered to see a big crowed in front of the house within five minutes!! A ten minutes discussion with the natives helped me to get understand few things about the old lady. She is an owner of the property and 10 cent plot . She had more than 3 lakhs rupees deposit in bank too. She prepared a will of document to transfer the assets in the name of a temple. Her relatives opposed her decision and they filed a allegation in court for partition of the property awaiting action. She did not have own children too. After the discussion me and policemen told them that she need urgent medical aid for brought her life back. We decided to admit her in a hospital.
By the time two drunkard men from the crowed come forward and shouted me: “Who the fuck are you to take her to the hospital??? Then he started to beat even the police men. Every one standing in the crowed watching the seen while the old lady trying badly to inhale. Suddenly, two well dressed ladies came into the seen and introduced themselves as the president and member of the panchayat. Without hearing or watching anything the two blinds stated opposing us and supported the drunkard men by saying “We will not allow any one to touch on the old lady”?
Then i asked them;” who will take care the old lady ,counting for last days???. She replied “Non of your business.
Now i clearly understand that money is the matter make the politicians, leaders, even the panchayat president to do business,, not service.!!!!!! Those Mafia behind the property allegation frightened and anxious whether they loose everything if we take care the old lady.
The tricks and plays they performed to portion the old lady’s wealth with utmost unity and team work if they bring out for some good thing they will get national award!!! We have to quit from there . The old lady on the bed watched all the rock show for her wealth and she whispered for water.
Who cares her??? They want her money. Really i felt i am living in a Demon God’s own country. Sorry mother, i too helpless !!
Panavally is a small village in Cherthala. Natives of this village (men & women) depends their lively hood on sea food processing.Whole families belongs to middle class. But it is evident that all of them had their own house property. The rescued lady named (Thatha ) 80 years lady owned 10 cent plot and property. She brought up 4 children and they arel settled in a well condition including a son who is a retired police officer too.But Thatha staying with her daughter (Kunju Pennu ) who run a farm in their plot. All kind of domestic animals are available in the farm (cows, goat, dogs and cats too). Income from the farm is enough to run the small family.
When i reached their house to rescue the old mom, the situation was horrible. The daughter treating her old aged mother like an animal. The daughter used to beat the old mom with big wood pieces and gave the same food for animals!!!! Said the condition of the old lady by a neighbour. A mom has given her blood and breast milk to feed the four children in the begging of their life . But at the end of life she is treating badly. Neighbours are ready to provide her food and necessary arrangement, but the elder daughter never allowed them to receive any kind of help from the neighbours. Many days thatha in a war against starvation to maintain the life even the family had no financial problems! The painful situation of the mother made cry the neighbours and the youngest daughter who wished to take her mother. But whenever she tried to take her mother the elder daughter not allowed and run away her by unkind words.
The Younger daughter is not so rich but she had a will to protect her mom called me with the help of neighbours at last. When we reached the the home the situation was pathetic. The old mom laid on a corner of a room where all animals ( cat, dog, Goat,Cows) simply run around her……..!!!!! No one can imagine the foul smell of cow dung spread on the floor includes the other animals too………….!!!!
With the help of many good natives like Mrs Sara,Mrs Pouli, Baio Mithra employee Mr Geego and Theruvoram volunteer Venkitesh i rescued the old lady from her pathetic farm villa . Now we are trying to provide medical treatment to Thathi. And the final decision on protecting the mom in future is not planned because of their various family matters. Now she is happy with us.
Few hours before, we were in trouble due to the inconvenience and time lag from the police station in Poochakal to provide the letter of approval. After three hours of long wait in my auto rickshaw the old mom is too tired now. But i kept the promise i made to her youngest daughter Mrs Lalitha to provide medical treatment for her mom in isolation ward at Ernakulam Government Hospital by admitting at 9.06 pm.
This case revealing the current trend in old age parents life in the culturally and socially developed Kerala. This is not a single case, this case is one among the many unreported cases in our state.. No wonder,,
YES THE SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS OF KERALA NOW REACHED THE POINT OF DEVELOPED COUNTRIES IS TRUE ONLY!!!!!!!
I have posted many success rescue operations. But this is the one which i helpless to rescue a girl child at midnight! I think this case can give you a clear view why many rescue operations of kids were failure to carry on…..
It was 1’o clock. i went back home after my night drive to sleep. It is usual to call someone for help when i took a deep breath to sleep after a big yawn. No doubt… I picked the call, but nothing could hear because of poor network. i called back again. The guy was a marine engineering student back from Gujarat by OK Train. He said that a girl child(10 years) was entered into their boggy from mangalapuram. They tried to contact railway police for the help. But no one get back them. I agreed to meet them in south railway station. The train left from kalamaserry then.So i took my bike and drive at a 100Km/Speed and reached the south railway station before the train halt.I was awaiting to see the child. When saw her she was sleeping on a seat. Engineering students and me together again called up police for the rescue assistance. Railway police come and told the girl child to leave away from there. She started to shiver, so i bought a coffee for her.
The main problem to rescue a girl child is that , a lady police constable should assist with her. Other wise i have to answer many questions there after because of the legal restrictions. I called local police for the help, again the reply was sad. There were no lady constables on night duty and they asked me to contact control room. There is no one to pick the call at least!!It was really painful and hopeless even i tried all the doors to get a positive reply for rescue a child.
It is easy to say that sorry i can’t help you,, but i can’t. It may not be a great thing to all. But for me, it is my duty and responsibility always. So the incident touch me badly.I t is no more to speechless!
There are 152(NGO)’s working in Kochi by receiving government grands. There are many cells and child care centres, police cell created to ensure child and women protection especially for people reached in the street at night. The so called institutions are always on media coverage. I am not trying to criticize what they did, but what not???
Kochi is growing to a smart metro. Metro rails, Container Terminals all signs indicate the speedy growth.Yes i agree with matters that it can change the old face of Kochi. But i am not believe if the development completely avoid the lower parts. There should be a good mechanism, legal frame work, co-ordination from NGO’s to take care children from street with easy and comfortable procedures.
It is difficult to rescue a child in these situations.Till 3.30 am i sit with her. When i felt there is no point to open the eyes of people acting like blind. I have to cross my legs over the child sleeping in the platform.I don’t have the courage to look her face again.
Who cares them? Who want to raise their voice? Truly madly i disappointed about the child!!!
